      Meet Mrs. Nemer

A Little About Me

Hi!  I am very excited to be your 3rd grade teacher this year and I look forward to getting to know you and your families.  This is my 4th year teaching at Devon Aire and I feel blessed to be able to teach at such a wonderful school!  I enjoy teaching children and my greatest satisfaction is seeing students succeed and watching them develop a love of learning.
My husband and I have been married for almost 2 years and we have a beautiful German Shepherd named Rocky.  Some things that I enjoy doing outside of the classroom include; spending time with my family, boating, taking pictures, and singing at my church.
Teaching is a gift that comes with great responsibility.  I take that responsibility very seriously, and I’m so grateful that I have been given the opportunity to earn a living doing something I love so much.  I simply can’t imagine doing anything else!  It is my hope that you will remember 3rd grade as a time when you were nurtured, challenged, inspired, and became well-equipped to move on to the the next great adventure!

What to expect in my classroom:

Expect the unexpected, and you’ll never be bored as part of our 3rd grade class.  In our class you will find music mixed with math, homemade whiteboards interchanged with paper and pencil, and children sitting on top of their desks just as naturally as in them.  It is my goal to ensure that students stay focused, engaged and interested in learning every day.  How do I make this happen?  Music is my secret weapon.  Music and song allows me to turn boring into fun, complicated to simple and forgettable to memorable.  I create songs for everything from reading strategies to complicated math skills.  This enables the students to associate the song with the skill or lesson, making it much easier to recall.  My students have come to associate music with a better understanding of the lesson at hand.  I actually have kids come up to me and say, "I don’t understand that…do you have a song for it?”  That makes my day!   We also play classical music as a backdrop throughout the day.  Having done research on the "Mozart effect", I have confirmed through first-hand experience that the music does seem to promote and stimulate brain activity.  It doesn't hurt that the kids love it too!  =)

Another all-important aspect of our classroom is the emphasis on incorporating such things as character building, life skills, and conflict resolution into everyday classroom life.  For example, I have set aside a ‘peace table’ where students are instructed to go and sit, face to face, to resolve conflicts with their classmates.  They know that I do not allow squabbles and arguments to escalate, and instead I simply point to the peace table.  The children go there by themselves, and use techniques I have taught them, including verbalizing their feelings, listening to the other person, and working out a resolution together.  The children are constantly taught, and expected to put into daily action, interpersonal skills that they will need to succeed throughout their lives.

The students in my class are expected to care for each other, look out for each other, and defend each other.  The children understand that their class is a family, and family members make each other feel good, feel safe, and are cared about.  Every student in my class believes that it’s their job to make sure that their friends are happy and feel good about themselves.  In return, they receive and expect that same love and compassion from their classmates.  These are life skills that I know they will carry on beyond their school years together.
